In the afternoon of August 31st, the SIES held a joint meeting of the leadership and CPC working group. Leadership members such as Xu Mingqi, Cao Ziheng, Chen Zhimin, Ding Chun, Yang Fengmin, Ye Jiang, Zheng Chunrong, Dai Qixiu, Yang Haifeng and the honorary President Dai Bingran, the former President Wu Yikang attended the meeting. Other members of the general secretariat were present at the meeting. The meeting discussed the work plan of the SIES for the second half of the year, especially the selection of the yearly excellent thesis, the general election of the SIES leadership, activities of the academic month and preparations of the annual meeting.
In the first place, Secretary General Cao Ziheng reported to the meeting activities the SIES had held in the first half of the year: The SIES has held academic exchange activities for 8 times, receiving nearly 30 scholars from Czech Republic, Germany, Serbia, the UK and the EU; jointly organized large academic conference for 2 times with Tongji University and the Institute of International Relations of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; held internal report meeting for 1 time; and hosted symposiums for 3 times. The SIES has hired an expert of European origin to act as the Deputy Director of the department of international communication and cooperation affiliated with it; and invited another European expert to work as an adviser to the institute, which will issue him an appointment letter on an international conference held between September and October next year. The meeting spoke highly of the work of the SIES in the first half of 2016 and were glad to see that all goals set at the beginning of the year had been achieved. The leadership agreed to the plan to hire an European adviser.
In the next session, Secretary General Cao Ziheng, on behalf of the secretariat, reported to the meeting the plan of the SIES to attend the academic month and its other work plans for the second half of the year. The meeting decided that: The SIES will 1.Jointly host a seminar on “The Changing World Economy and the European Foreign Economic Talks and Policies” on Oct. 22nd at the conference room of the department of the united front of the Xuhui District with the Shanghai Institute of World Economy, Shanghai Institute of International Relations, and the Institute of EU Studies of the Shanghai University of International Studies; 2. Hold an awarding ceremony of the “Yearly Excellent Thesis of the Youth” and a youth forum themed by “The Interpretation of the Global Strategy of the EU” on Nov. 20th at the Shanghai Institute of Global Issues, and on the afternoon of the same day, hold “The Annual Meeting of 2016 and a Seminar o n the Brexit and the Future of the EU”; 3. Jointly hold a seminar on “The Global Strategy of the EU” with the department of international relations of Fudan University on the afternoon of Nov. 1st at the university, which will be the seminar held by the SIES as activities in the academic month; 4. Apply for a one-year delay of general election due to changes in human resources; 5. Issue for another time the call for excellent youth thesis and ask members present to circulate the news; 6. Publish a volume of collected thesis on the topic of “The EU under Multiple Crisis”.
