On the afternoon of December 14, 2019, the 2019 Annual Meeting and the Symposium on New Challenges Facing the European Union under the New Situation were held at East China University of Science and Technology. Yang FengMin, Vice President of SIES and director of the Center for European Studies of East China University of Science and Technology, chaired the opening ceremony of the annual meeting. In the written speech of Xu MingQi, President of SIES, he thanked the members for actively participating in various academic and exchange activities organized by the SIES and for giving great support to the work of the board of directors and the secretariat of the SIES, making 2019 a fruitful year. He pointed out that SIES as an academic community carrying the mission of academic exchange has made its own contributions to the emergence of academic ideas and the clash of academic opinions. Wu Yikang, consultant and honorary SIES said that in the context of the British Parliament’s general election of the lower house and the update of the leadership of the main institutions of the European Union, the Europe is characterized by a new situation,and there will be new challenges ahead. For example, how will the European Union treat the US attitude towards it in the future. Ma Tieju, Dean of the School of Business of East China University of Science and Technology extended warm congratulations to the annual meeting of the SIES. Subsequently, the members of the Institute listened, reviewed and approved the work reports made by Secretary General Yang Haifeng and Supervisor Cao Ziheng from the SIES. At the academic seminar, experts and scholars from universities and research institutions in Shanghai carried out exchanges and discussions on topics such as the repositioning and adjustment of the EU, the strategic decisions of the major EU countries, and the development of China-EU relations.
