On December 15, 2024, the Shanghai Institute for European Studies (SIES) and the Center for China-Europe Relations of the Institute of International Studies of Fudan University co-organized a symposium on “China-Europe Relations and China's Response amid Unprecedented Global Changes” in the Liberal Arts Building of Fudan University. Prof. Ding Chun, President of the Shanghai Institute for European Studies and Director of Center for European Studies of Fudan University, and Researcher Qi Huaigao, Vice President of the Institute of International Studies of Fudan University, delivered speeches respectively, while Prof. Xu Mingqi, Honorary President of the Shanghai Institute for European Studies, and Associate Prof. Jian Junbo, Associate Director of Center for China-Europe relations, Institute of International Studies of Fudan University, and Associate Researcher Yan Shaohua presided over the relevant parts of the meeting.
The symposium was divided into four themes, namely “Geopolitical Competition and Challenges of China-Europe Relations”, “Space for China-Europe Cooperation and Adjustment of China’s Policies towards Europe”, “Central and Eastern Europe and China-Europe Relations” and “Changes in Global Order, Global South and the Future of China-EU Relations”. Participants believed that China should stabilize and promote China-Europe relations in a positive, pragmatic and flexible way and safeguard its core national interests in the face of Europe’s sluggish growth, the change of EU institutions, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and the change of the U.S. presidency amid unprecedented global changes and accelerated geopolitical transformation of Europe. Participants included scholars from Fudan University, Tongji University, Shanghai Institute of International Studies, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, as well as relevant leaders from Etsingshan Industry (Shanghai Decent Investment (Group) Co., Ltd.), Yan Baohang Public Welfare Foundation, Sensetime Auto, and GYMD Digital Technology Co., Ltd..
